There has been quite a lot of interest from persons in Summerstrand (mainly on the IRC channel) so I thought we needed a Summerstrand thread on the forum to track what's happening.

At the moment PEWUG does not have a highsite in Summerstrand.

Basically what is needed is: A suitable location for a highsite and the necessary equipment. Typically a highsite is funded by those will use it - the WUG is a community effort after all.

If all interested parties could register their interest in this thread we could perhaps start to make some headway with this...

Since October last year I’ve been hosting an online World of Warcraft game server and have been looking for a way to host it wirelessly as well.
I hope to be able to do this on this network.

Hi fishbone,

The reason for Mikrotik is because we are using "nstreme" on most (possibly all) of the highsites.. It has a significant effect in increasing throughput.

Basically if someone wanted to connect with a non nstreme capable device (i.e., anything other than a Mikrotik routerboard) .. we would need to turn off nstreme on that particular highsite. - Which would result in all the current users experiencing a performance decrease.

I'm not saying it can't be done but obviously at least the current users would have to be happy with that.

I'd also like to say that several guys did try the Nanostations in the earlier days and the overall impression of them is not positive.

The Mikrotik system is quite simple actually and it's also what we're most familiar with and therefore the easiest to get setup.

On the question of 2.4/5.8 most of the highsites support both. Theescombe highsite (which I connect to) has got both a 2.4 and a 5.8 sector.

Hope this is of use.. come chat to us on the irc channel if you need more info. :-)

I am interested in the Nanostation5 as it seems to be one of the simpler solutions.
Two questions.
1. I see in the forums that you require a MicroTik Router Board. Does this mean that the Nanostation5 will not work.
2. Are the towers operating on the 5.8ghz band yet? I would be connecting to the Theescombe Tower as it is less than 3km away.

Thanks

It depends what theire trying to pawn off on you. I know Aerosat used to use mikrotik routerboard equipment and those are the same we use, but i have also seen some of their link use Ubiquity Bullets and we DONT use those. For the reasons mentioned above, we only use Mikrotik Routerboards, or PC's running the Mikrotik OS.....

Hi Bergie,

Remember wifi is a 2 way communication.

The highsites and average end uses kits are significantly more powerful than a typical wifi device (such as a laptop with builtin wifi) .. so while you can easily pick up the highsite from a considerable distance with any standard wifi device, the highsite is never going to receive a signal back from you and hence you will not be able to connect, unless if you are literally within about 50m of the highsite (you would probably have to be even closer).

Just wana know will I still need to buy the hardware you guys keep saying is needed? If so, please give me an explination in english of what difference it makes :D(beby language). I connect to my router at home wirelessly, so wouldn't connecting to the PEWUG be kinda the same thing?

The wifi equipment we use is called Routerboard's and they run the Mikrotik Routerboard Operating system.

The routerboards have a facility called NSTREME that employes some software trickery to clean up the signal and make an adequate signal more usable. We have turned this facility on, on almost all our towers.

This means to following : You cannot connect to our towers with anything other than a routerboard, or a pc running routeros. You MUST have nstreme enabled to connect.

This means youre notebook, Nano's, bullets, and other non RB CPE's will not be able to connect.

You can Buy Roterboards from Digital Dynamix at 501 Cape Road.

We're less than 6 weeks away from the BIGGEST Network Gaming event Durban sees each year!!! We're not going for 600 this year. We're planning on making it a full 500-man LAN with 90% of the LAN being Gigabit (best you buy your ticket and book your seat ASAP)!

So, who is AMPED?!?!?

Finer details are as follows:

Date: 11-13 December 2009
Place: Edgewood College Dininghall, UKZN, Pinetown
Cost: please visit http://shop.frag.co.za for details on prices.
see http://www.frag.co.za for more details or contact 0837924774 (douglash)

Bookings will only be accepted upon payment for the seats. No reservations will be made without payment.

So, next up on the list, tournaments. The tournaments to be played will be as follows:

Call of Duty 4: 5 v 5 Search & Destroy (Promod Live - AGASA Maps & FRAG Ruleset)
DoTA: 5 v 5
Crysis Wars: Team Deathmatch 2 v 2
Counter-Strike Source: 5 v 5 KOTH (minimum of 8 teams needed to enter ; pay2play tournament)

plus more to be finalised...

Prizes, well, that's always a sensitive subject for majority of the real "competitive" players in the gaming fraternity. This year, the prizes are not confirmed yet, they will be as soon as possible, but the prize pool will be in the region of approx. R30 000. FRAG is endeavouring to give prizes as far down as 5th place for this event.

This year promises to be the best Showcase yet. The usual FRAG attendees are buzzing and have all commented that they are looking forward to the Showcase. There'll be a pool, volleyball, pool table, Xbox setups, giveaways, promotions, etc. at this event.

More details will be added as they are confirmed, but let's face it, the only way the Showcase will be a Showcase is if YOU buy a ticket and make it happen!!

Any queries, comments, suggestions, critique, etc. can be posted on our forums.

Looking forward to it...? We are....!!!!

Howdy folks, My name is Jan.
I am NOT in the IT industry. :D I am the most dangerous sort of PC user. The power user. Essentially this means I read around a bit and then reckon I know what I am doing. A couple of $$$ later and I know that I don't :) Still, its an interesting way to learn, and I like to learn about how stuff works, so I started a wifi network in early 2004 between 3 sites (I bullied some family members into it :p) it worked fine for quite a while but I ran out of time and enthusiasm to maintain it, after all it was a internal network of sorts and nobody can abuse you like your family if the resource goes down while they are playing their games. :D. Seems like there are lot more peeps here now, so I will be looking into getting up and running again.

Brad, if you want DIY you can do it mostly that way...

Grant made an omni that managed to connect from Westering to Theesecombe.. only out of LMR 400 cable cut and soldered to specific lengths.. took about 4 hours but cost next to nothing :)

With a small 90 degree backing plate its more then directional enough to connect you.

As for the routerboard you can always start with the smallest one, then you just need the cable with connectors, box, pole & power supply!
