There has been quite a lot of interest from persons in Summerstrand (mainly on the IRC channel) so I thought we needed a Summerstrand thread on the forum to track what's happening.

At the moment PEWUG does not have a highsite in Summerstrand.

Basically what is needed is: A suitable location for a highsite and the necessary equipment. Typically a highsite is funded by those will use it - the WUG is a community effort after all.

If all interested parties could register their interest in this thread we could perhaps start to make some headway with this...

The wifi equipment we use is called Routerboard's and they run the Mikrotik Routerboard Operating system.

The routerboards have a facility called NSTREME that employes some software trickery to clean up the signal and make an adequate signal more usable. We have turned this facility on, on almost all our towers.

This means to following : You cannot connect to our towers with anything other than a routerboard, or a pc running routeros. You MUST have nstreme enabled to connect.

This means youre notebook, Nano's, bullets, and other non RB CPE's will not be able to connect.

You can Buy Roterboards from Digital Dynamix at 501 Cape Road.

I am interested in the Nanostation5 as it seems to be one of the simpler solutions.
Two questions.
1. I see in the forums that you require a MicroTik Router Board. Does this mean that the Nanostation5 will not work.
2. Are the towers operating on the 5.8ghz band yet? I would be connecting to the Theescombe Tower as it is less than 3km away.

Thanks

If i do a scan on my pc for wireless networks i pick up the PEWUG network(quite a strong signal). Just wana know will I still need to buy the hardware you guys keep saying is needed? If so, please give me an explination in english of what difference it makes :D(beby language). I connect to my router at home wirelessly, so wouldn't connecting to the PEWUG be kinda the same thing?

We're less than 6 weeks away from the BIGGEST Network Gaming event Durban sees each year!!! We're not going for 600 this year. We're planning on making it a full 500-man LAN with 90% of the LAN being Gigabit (best you buy your ticket and book your seat ASAP)!

So, who is AMPED?!?!?

Finer details are as follows:

Date: 11-13 December 2009
Time: 10:00 (11th) - 10:00 (13th)
Place: Edgewood College Dininghall, UKZN, Pinetown
Cost: please visit http://shop.frag.co.za for details on prices.
see http://www.frag.co.za for more details or contact 0837924774 (douglash)

Bookings will only be accepted upon payment for the seats. No reservations will be made without payment.

So, next up on the list, tournaments. The tournaments to be played will be as follows:

Call of Duty 4: 5 v 5 Search & Destroy (Promod Live - AGASA Maps & FRAG Ruleset)
DoTA: 5 v 5
Crysis Wars: Team Deathmatch 2 v 2
Counter-Strike Source: 5 v 5 KOTH (minimum of 8 teams needed to enter ; pay2play tournament)

plus more to be finalised...

Prizes, well, that's always a sensitive subject for majority of the real "competitive" players in the gaming fraternity. This year, the prizes are not confirmed yet, they will be as soon as possible, but the prize pool will be in the region of approx. R30 000. FRAG is endeavouring to give prizes as far down as 5th place for this event.

This year promises to be the best Showcase yet. The usual FRAG attendees are buzzing and have all commented that they are looking forward to the Showcase. There'll be a pool, volleyball, pool table, Xbox setups, giveaways, promotions, etc. at this event.

More details will be added as they are confirmed, but let's face it, the only way the Showcase will be a Showcase is if YOU buy a ticket and make it happen!!

Any queries, comments, suggestions, critique, etc. can be posted on our forums.

Looking forward to it...? We are....!!!!

Just thought I should post here..

I've got a backup hub running on my server, this is till Ocean gets back and restores his one.

I think it might be a good idea to always have a spare one anyway, so unless someone else wants to, I shall leave mine running all the time - it utilizes almost no CPU anyway so I don't mind.

It can be connected to on: 172.21.3.90:1088
Password is the same as Oceans for simplicity's sake.

Note the port number.. it's not the default for a DC hub..

Hey guys, the Lovemore Heights tower will be going down sometime tomorrow to have the OS reinstalled. Hopefully this will alleviate the stability issues we have been experiencing lately.

Many have been asking what equipment they need to connect to the WUG network.

We are in the process of negotiating prices with a supplier for CPE units. We are hopefully going to get these in at about R1k. I will keep you posted as to the progress on this...

For those that would like to use their current equipment, we are going to be running the access points on 2.4Ghz so I would recomend making your purchaces or choices accordingly.

The main network will be running on Routerboards using RouteOS from Mikrotik. The are stable and cost efective. For the local supplier contact Craig at Digital Dynamix on 041 3609589.

For those who would like to recomend some other hardware/software please post away...

Grant is has dug the hole for his tower but is still weding and planning his tower. Seems it will take a bit longer then expected (perhaps an extra week longer as he is working on a pivoting pole which requires additional welding and working on).

He has suggested that if we are urgent for the link we can temporarily put up the two grids, box and omni on his current pole.

I suggest we wait the extra week till his propper pole is up as two weeks from now is not such a long time and we can continue to add guys to each tower.

Today dewald completed his bracket, pole and link to the Theesecombe tower which is expected to turned on this coming week.

Delays are due to an enclosure we have been waiting for which was first the wrong size and now on the way..

This is a server for playing amongst other things, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Diablo 2.

As most interest will prob be around Warcraft 3, I've put together a quick guide on how to connect. http://www.wug.za.net/wiki/index.php/PEWug::HowToAccessPvPGN

Hi guys

Many of you have mentioned the idea of changing some aspects of the website and some even wanting to redesign it. So I thought we should post our ideas and look at creating a site that caters for most if not all the requirements.

Please let us have your thoughts.

So far we have these ideas:

available on the WUG a well as the internet

Must have a "Wiki" format

I have a RouterBoard with a Enclosure (Case) & Power Supply for Sale, all new, only switched on once but not used. I bought it to try out but it's too complicated for me, I currently use a Linksys and wanted to check out the RB, so I bought it, but since I prefer the Linksys I'm selling it.

I'm with KoshWUG here in NW and we use Linksys not RB's.

Items Included:
*RouterBoard 133C - 16MB, 1 LAN, 1 MINI-PCI SLOT & L3 License
*MikroTik Indoor Case for RB133C, RB411, RB411A - 1 Ethernet Hole 1
*24V Power Supply Unit

Shipping via SpeedServices for R55
