Grant is has dug the hole for his tower but is still weding and planning his tower. Seems it will take a bit longer then expected (perhaps an extra week longer as he is working on a pivoting pole which requires additional welding and working on).

He has suggested that if we are urgent for the link we can temporarily put up the two grids, box and omni on his current pole.

I suggest we wait the extra week till his propper pole is up as two weeks from now is not such a long time and we can continue to add guys to each tower.

Today dewald completed his bracket, pole and link to the Theesecombe tower which is expected to turned on this coming week.

Delays are due to an enclosure we have been waiting for which was first the wrong size and now on the way..

I have everything (does not mean that people don't need to contribute). I still need to configure it though.

    Great, thanks Hilton.

Really guys, remember that even if this is not the tower you are gonna connect to it is very likely you will use it for file sharing, gaming etc etc.. so please contribute ANYTHING at this stage.
I have no shame when it comes to asking for money.. so read this: :)
We are only a few guys and we are really struggling to do the job properly! We don't want to have to put up second hand boards, old wireless cards, connectors etc as this degrades the speed / quality across the whole network, so anyone who can, even R50 is good.

The guys that are now on have already contributed a substantial amount and so this is predominantly to the guys who would like to join: If you possibly can, budget for an extra little something for the backbone.

Grant messaged me last night and said the welding is pretty much all finished and the structure is ready for galvanizing. Shoul be going in today (Thurs 16 Oct 08) The hole is dug and he is putting all his free time into it. (he has had to get telkom to move a cable that ran accross his yard buried and had to dig 45m of trench for it, then had to buy thick black pipe to lay the cable in (another R800... so as you see he is a dedicated bugger - I mean wugger! :)

This is so he can swing the tower down without it catching the telephone lines.

So things are happening even if it seems quite!

p.s. Grant has a brand new omni that he said we can use (much newer then the one we were goingto use).

That reminds me, Hilton, if we need more wireless cards (we will need two 5gigs and one 2.4), I believe Dave bought two as a contribution. His new ones should work much better then my 5 year old one/s that came with the board. (cant remember how many were on the board).

Latest is that we got everything done (galvanizing cleaning etc) and built the base of the tower.

    Details here:

(When wug.za.net has revamped and pewifi supports uploading pictures I will also upload there).

We will be installing the extension / swing pole which is the upper part of the structure later today (friday).

Once we are done and happy with the sturdiness (might need to buy some equipment Sat morning to finalise stability etc) then we expect to be installing the equipment on Saturday.

If you would like to attend and help with the install / learn about installing please message me on my chat.

Will keep in touch on g-talk for those interested.

As for Theesecombe will be going up there in the morning to see what's going on and why it seem to be off.

How do you guys feel about swapping the current omni at Grants place with a 5.8 Sector?

I would be rather keen on that... I'm around the corner from grant but don't think i'll get anything from the omni. I'm willing to contribute some finances to this venture...

Well then perhaps i would get a good connection. However, would it be a bad thing if we put a sector there? I assume the long term plan for the tower would be three sectors or are we happy to leave an omni up there indefinitely?

I understand grant mentioned something about it...putting up a sector also (5 gig if not mistaken).

However I have to tell you in Central Aerosat runs an 8db (1 foot long) omni to which over 80 clients connect and do over 4mb/s day and night (not sure if now but 3 years ago was their busiest tower).

The other down-side is that there are currently ppl connecting from all directions.
The East (Edge of Cotswold), South West and North so one sector wouldn't quite cover it all.

Lastly, putting up three sectors requires a whole extra board (unless you connect 3 sectors on one card :).

Have you done a signal test? If you want Grant and I can lend a hand.
