What is needed to connect?

Many have been asking what equipment they need to connect to the WUG network.

We are in the process of negotiating prices with a supplier for CPE units. We are hopefully going to get these in at about R1k. I will keep you posted as to the progress on this...

For those that would like to use their current equipment, we are going to be running the access points on 2.4Ghz so I would recomend making your purchaces or choices accordingly.

The main network will be running on Routerboards using RouteOS from Mikrotik. The are stable and cost efective. For the local supplier contact Craig at Digital Dynamix on 041 3609589.

For those who would like to recomend some other hardware/software please post away...

Please use plain language for the uninformed = me. :)

    CPE = Customer-premises equipment or customer-provided equipment ?

Sorry, very new at this. If a user can provide a high site will he have to supply the "repeating" equipment?

    Hi Road runner

    CPE = Customer Premises Equipment

And in our case CPE = Customer Provided Equipment as well ;)

If you are willing to provide a high-site/tower we can gather the needed equipment from the users ie. yourself and those in the are the high-site will cover. Remeber this is a non-profit comunity network so expect to get out what you put in.

This is a very interesting subject... Some say it's best to keep with a single type of hardware, (I can't blame wireless hardware and software manufacturers for making compatiblity and performance higher withing their own product range compared to when used with another)... However, we cant all afford or get our hands on the same type so for someone who know's very little and doesn't want to know the details... a "just connect me already!" - it's difficult to beat a Sanao client bridge. They are pretty tough, easy as hell to configure.. require no routing (they are bridges afterall), and best of all they are (I stand under correction) one of the few wireless devices allowed to operate at 200mAmps power. (Legal in SA is 100).

When results of our first meeting are added here more info will be available. Until then look at www.routerboard.com and Mikrotik!

    Hi Dave

If you are wanting to buy a routerboard to use as a CPE then look at the RB133 they are small, affordable and reasonably powerful. Your best bet would be to buy from Digital Dynamix, also remember to ask for it on the PEWUG cash account ;)

We would like to put up a tower on Theescome hill that would cover the Lorriane area. We however need some more contributions to make that a viable option. We are still R700 short for the previous antenna we bought.

How much do you guys need? I have a few friends in this area...

If this is done, will we be able to get access with a normal wireless card?

Sorry i am a bit stupid when it comes to wireless, use to working with cables:)

Do you have a MSN account where i/we can invite you on?

    hi,
You will be better off putting an ap in a waterproof box on a pole outside with a panel antenna(or similar type depending on gain required) and cat5 running inside to your pc or a wireless card can work with low loss coax to antenna (very expensive per meter)and outside antenna.

It would be best practice to run an ethernet cable to a router stationed in a weatherproof enclosure. The antenna cable effects your signal when run over extensive lengths.

    Hi guys,

I'm now ready (in the finance department) to do some equipment shopping. :D
I'd prefer to keep it under R1500.00 I can go a bit higher though if necessary..

I suppose I'm best off contacting Digital Dynamics as mentioned above somewhere..
Any hints as to what stuff I should ask for?

    Thanks.

If you want to buy a decent router ask for the Routerboard 133 (should not need more than this) and a R52 mini-pci wireless card. You will also need an antenna, take a look at the Poynting panel antennas. Digital should have stock of all the mentioned items, dont forget to ask for it on the PEWUG cash account.

    Hey Kerneels

    Yeah... you can do that!
There are a few options... but if they live close enough you could setup your routerboard with two mini-pci cards. The one card would have the panel/grid antenna connected to it for your connection to the high-site. The other card could then have an omni-directional antenna connected to service your friends/neighbours. But this omni connection will only really work for those that are quite close to you.

    Hi Kerneels,

If you put the omni a few meters above the highest surrounding roofs and (preferably) trees you could have friends - with line of site from their panel - 1km or more away connect at good speed.

You could use a 12 db omni. If you have one friend or a few in the generally same direction use a panel rather as it's alot less "noisy" in terms of signal.

If in doubt give me a pm and I will give you my msn / google chat / tel. and / or I can come to your place a help you out there.

This goes for everyone.. feel free to make use of my services to do signal tests and help you get connected... you don't need to know much.. we will teach you!!! :-)

Well I'm one step nearer now!

I have acquired some equipment, thanks to Craig at Digital Dynamics.
I got the goodies as recommended by Hilton above, it's a very neat and compact little package I must say!

    Hi oceanmaster,
if I put a 12db omni on my roof would my neighbour across the road be able to connect near the back of his house using the small dipole that comes with a pci wireless card?
or will a better aerial be required?

90% chance yes... however in the same breath if he has two foot thick walls and a metal roof you might have problems getting his weak signal back. :)

Recommend to do test first b4 buying anything.. I have omni and card to test with. Call if you want to test.

I am hiking Sat morning and running a race on Sun. anytime other then that I am free.
